Hoosiers (1986)
Gene Hackman stars as a middle-aged man with a questionable past who winds up as the basketball coach of a small high school in Indiana. The eminently believable Hackman teams with Dennis Hopper, whose supporting role as the town drunk deservedly rated him an Oscar nomination. The small town of Hickory seems real, as do its residents, even it their behavior isn’t always likable. Written, directed, and edited with a sincere earnestness, the film rises above the usual formulaic sports film.
