Tortilla Flat (1942)
A rather flat adaptation of a lesser John Steinbeck work, this film is immediately difficult to watch because of the American, Austrian, Russian, and even Norwegian actors cast as Mexican immigrants in California. John Garfield and Hedy Lamarr do lend the production some much-needed passion, and Frank Morgan merited a Best Supporting Actor nod for his turn as a scared, lonely old man, but watching Spencer Tracy’s reprehensible character, who continually uses his friends, gets old quickly. Decent, noteworthy for its ridiculous casting, but eminently easy to skip.
