Enemies, A Love Story (1989)
In a tale of a Holocaust survivor and his romantic entanglements subsequent to the war, Ron Silver stars as the traumatized man, unable to make decisions and genuinely carry on with his life. Both Anjelica Huston and Lena Olin deservedly received Best Supporting Actress nods, yet Polish actress Malgorzata Zajaczkowska (billed as Margaret Sophie Stein) surpasses them both. The script, adapted from an Isaac Bashevis Singer novel, also rated an Academy Award nom, but though filled with good acting, the film fails to engage the audience emotionally. Decent, but should have been better.
