The Butler (2013)
Disappointing story of an African American butler who serves seven U.S. presidents, told against the backdrop of the civil rights movement. Forest Whitaker and David Ayelowo turn in fine performances, but the supporting cast add little, and the march of famous actors as the various presidents provides less value than it does distraction. Lee Daniels’ direction and Danny Strong’s script feel more like made-for-television efforts, rather than those of a cinematic release, a particular problem for a film with such important subject matter.
