Soylent Green (1973)
This well-known science fiction film, adapted from Harry Harrison’s novel, Make Room! Make Room!, features Charlton Heston as a city police detective fifty years in the future. Working with a researcher played by Edward G. Robinson in his final screen role, Heston’s Thorn seeks to solve the murder of a wealthy businessman, the president of the company supplying the world with food. Extremely dated and with low production values, the film still manages to touch on some important ideas, including the mistreatment of the poor, the abuse of women, and the immorality of the rich. For those those themes, the film earns one star, and another for the performance of Mr. Robinson.
