Hereafter (2010)
Clint Eastwood continues to impress with his directorial choices. This small, deliberate work studiously avoids sentimentality, a difficult task when dealing with death, life after death, and possible connections between. Matt Damon and Cécile de France turn in fine performances in their lead roles, but young Frankie and George McLaren are standouts as twin brothers visited by tragedy. Filmed in flat tones, the matter-of-fact storytelling works more on an intellectual level than on an emotional one, but it does work.
