The Public (2018)
Emilio Estevez writes, directs, and stars in this meditation on homelessness, which touches on both society’s moral obligations and its usual amoral responses to this ongoing issue. Though it has its heart firmly in the right place, the film frequently frustrates the audience when characters fail to communicate in ways obviously demanded by the situation. Good acting and decent direction cannot save a script that doesn’t quite know how to resolve itself.
