Gemini Man (2019)
Ang Lee directs Will Smith—and Will Smith—in this action film that clearly wanted to dive deeper, to muse on themes such as identity, loss, and regret. Unfortunately, what’s written in the script doesn’t really support that in a meaningful way, to the point where an Academy Award–winning director and an Academy Award–nominated lead actor cannot elevate the material much above the level of a gimmick (Will Smith portraying his older and younger selves). While Clive Owens chews his villainous way through several scenes, Benedict Wong is solid, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead is particularly good.
