Roma Città Aperta [Rome, Open City] (1945)
Realistic and horrifying tale of Nazi soldiers searching out the resistance during Germany’s 1943 occupation of Rome. Fine performances and taut direction make for believable tension, with no compromises made with respect to Nazi cruelty. Fascinating, especially given that Roberto Rossellini made the film immediately after the end of the war.
