Much Ado About Nothing (2012)
Joss Whedon breathes new life into Shakespeare’s delightful tale of bickering, dedicated singles Beatrice and Benedick, and young lovers Hero and Claudio. While the setting is updated to a twenty-first century American home, the language remains sixteenth-century metered English. Mr. Whedon’s direction feels rich and true, and the actors deliver strong, believable performances. Of particular note are Clark Gregg as Leonato, Amy Acker as Beatrice, and Nathan Fillion as the earnest and almost inept Dogberry. The cinematography is artfully delivered in black and white, but the film is comically colorful. Recommended.
