Amour (2012)
Realistic and therefore difficult film about the infirmities and indignities, the responsibilities and the anguish of old age. Jean-Louis Trintignant’s portrayal of the loving, longtime husband of a woman struck down by stroke is delicate, though matter of fact, and tender, though straightforward. Emmanuelle Riva plays the wife with a combination of strength and fragility that breaks the audience’s heart. A fine piece of work by writer-director Michael Haneke, honest, though not exactly enjoyable.
