Goodbye, Columbus (1969)
This sex comedy from 1969 not only comes off as extremely dated, as might be expected half a century later, but it also contains little sex and even less comedy. Richard Benjamin does about the best he can with what he’s given, but Ali McGraw, in what amounted to her silver-screen debut, chews a fair amount of scenery on her way to an unsatisfying conclusion. Doubtless intended as a droll and sophisticated take on the changing mores of the time, Goodbye, Columbus comes off now more like a dull will-they-or-won’t-they meditation on a cross-cultural, cross-class couple.
