The VVitch: A New-England Folktale [The Witch] (2015)
As writer-director Robert Eggers’ film unfurls, it artistically earns its subtitle of a New England folktale. Taking place in the 1630s in colonial America, this period piece grounds itself deeply in its setting, right down to the puritanical nature of its main characters and the seventeenth-century British English they speak. A sense of dread pervades The VVitch in a way that draws most effectively from the psychological effects of hardship, isolation, and religious zealotry. A superior horror movie, it avoids many of the genre’s most hackneyed tropes.
