The Invention of Lying (2009)
This film—starring, co-written, and co-directed by Ricky Gervais—postulates a world where mankind never developed the capacity to lie. Some obvious comedy is mined from this, and a potentially explosive exploration of god and religion arises, but the promising premise feels one-note and goes largely unfulfilled. The usually funny Mr. Gervais stumbles here, with the script and direction seeming slapdash, with almost no follow-through. Only Jennifer Garner shines, but to say she saved this movie would be a lie.
